Purpose
This policy outlines acceptable and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools by students at ANPS. It aims to promote ethical behavior, protect academic integrity, and guide students in leveraging AI as a learning aid, not a substitute for their own work.
Definitions
AI Tools: Any software or platform that uses artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, Canva Magic Write, or image generators like DALL·E or Midjourney.
Plagiarism: Using someone else's work or AI-generated work without proper attribution or presenting it as your own.
Acceptable Use of AI by Students
Students may use AI tools with permission and within the following guidelines:
Allowed:
- Brainstorming ideas or outlines for essays and projects.
- Practicing language or communication skills.
- Proofreading and grammar suggestions (e.g., Grammarly).
- Exploring creative prompts for art or writing, if approved by the teacher.
- Learning coding principles or troubleshooting programming issues.
- Clarifying difficult concepts as a supplement to teacher instruction.
Prohibited Use of AI by Students
The following uses are not allowed and may result in academic penalties:
Not Allowed:
- Submitting AI-generated essays, assignments, or projects as your own work.
- Using AI to bypass learning, such as solving math problems or writing responses without understanding the content.
- Copying answers directly from AI tools and claiming them as original.
- Using AI to cheat on tests, quizzes, or assessments.
- Generating or submitting AI-created images, videos, or documents that contain false or misleading information.
- Any use of AI that violates school rules, copyright, or community values.
Plagiarism and Academic Integrity
- AI-generated content must be cited if used. Failing to do so is considered plagiarism.
- Students must always indicate when they have used an AI tool and explain how it contributed to the final work.
- Teachers may use AI-detection tools to verify the authenticity of student work.
- Plagiarism through AI use will result in consequences per the school's Academic Integrity Policy.
Teacher Guidance and Transparency
- Students must seek guidance from their teachers before using AI tools for any graded work.
- Teachers will clearly communicate what AI use is permitted for each assignment.
Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
- AI should be used responsibly and ethically.
- Students should critically evaluate any AI-generated content and not rely on it as a source of truth.
- Personal data must not be entered into AI tools without parental or school consent.
Consequences for Misuse
Violations of this policy may lead to:
- Loss of credit for the assignment.
- Disciplinary action.
- Notification to parents or guardians.
- Review by the academic integrity board (if applicable).
Review and Updates
This policy will be reviewed annually to reflect advancements in AI and changes in educational practice.
